Muirwood Vineyards Chardonnay
Arroyo Seco 2010

Chardonnay. One of the most popular California grapes grown. It’s no wonder, due to it’s wonderful versatility. To me, it’s somewhat the “white” version of a Merlot. It has been around forever and has endured trends; flak; mistreatment and love all over the world, especially in California. One of it’s all time controversies is “oaked” vs. “unoaked”. Purely a taste preference, of course and very subjective. These days, it seems I meet more people who prefer their Chardonnay to be more on the fruit forward side; unoaked. Personnaly for me, this becomes closer to a Sauvignon Blanc than I prefer and I happen to love the “old school” Creme Brûlée Chards; oak and full mouthfeel like butter. BUT, I have come to appreciate the newer oaked style when it has achieved balance with a slight creaminess to let the beautiful fruit shine through. It can be a grand thing.

Arroyo Seco Vineyards, Inc. (ASV) Wines have been winegrowers; bottlers and shipper services for over 20+ years. They are one of the largest wineries and grape growing operations in California. ASV started bottling their own wines about 10 years ago and started with their Muirwood line. Muirwood is limited production reserve wines that are grown, produced and bottled from ASV’s Monterey vineyards.

The Muirwood Vineyards Chardonnay Arroyo Seco 2010 is a “oaked” Chardonnay, but done in a newer trend that is perfect balance. A little oak can go a LONG way with great fruit in a Chardonnay and ASV has got this one down right. The color is light golden, very clear and crisp. The nose gives up apples and melons with a bit of oak and definite butter components. Tasting this beauty brings forward the apple and citrus right off the top. The oak and butter come in lightly behind the fruit, very balanced with a refreshing moderate finish.

Muirwood Vineyards Chardonnay Arroyo Seco 2010 gets a THREE BOTTLE rating. I think it’s a fabulous buy for the $10 range. I found mine at Total Wines and you can also buy via online at many popular online retailers. This is a great white to have on hand for summer or for friends popping by unexpectedly. Chardonnay grapes are simple, yet complex with lots of attention for many reasons good and “fad”. Make your reason your own – grab a bottle of Muirwood Vineyards Chardonnay Arroyo Seco and get the balance we all need at the end of a teetering day!
