“TO BUBBLE OR NOT TO BUBBLE”

Sparkling wine. A often thought of wine for special occasions and while this is traditional, it’s not really just a special occasion drink. It’s bright, bubbly, fun and refreshing. Especially on a warm, summers day! Sparkling wines pair with any type of food and make wonderful cocktail recipes, and many cost less than $15.00. With this much versatility, why is it that we don’t drink it more often? I’m not exactly sure, but I’m here to tell you to start changing your perspective of the “bubbly”!

dvinewinetime Gloria Ferrer Royal Cuvee 2Yesterday was Mothers Day and while many of us celebrate our mothers with some sort of brunch, lunch or special dinner ~ the lovely Mimosa is a usual part of a Mothers Day brunch. I received a lovely bottle this past week of the Gloria Ferrer Brut Royal Cuvée 2004 and I opened it to enjoy on Mothers Day. As much as I love a wonderful Mimosa, I did not want to tamper with THIS sparkling wine. I chilled it well, popped the cork and sipped on it, straight up!

The Gloria Ferrer Royal Cuvée is Brut, so it’s wonderfully dry and crisp. (my preferred style of sparkling wine) The color is a very light straw with hints of golden sunlight dancing among the bubbles in the glass. There is always a difference among sparkling wines when it comes to strong or weak bubbles and the Gloria Ferrer has a strong effervescent, but a delicate bubble. As you tickle your nose and sniff the wine, it exudes almond orchards with slight butter and citrus notes. Crisp and dry on the palate with almond butter, green apple and herbal notes of thyme. The mouth feel is full and round and because of this and the almond butter notes, it makes the wine have a buttery texture on your tongue. The Gloria Ferrer Brut Royal Cuvée 2003 vintage earns a FIVE BOTTLE Rating. This is a top-notch sparkling wine and sells for around $32.00 a bottle. Not at all expensive when you consider the premium juice that goes into this sparkling wine. Sixty seven percent Carneros Pinot Noir and thirty three percent Chardonnay ~ it is a bomb of wine! Special occasion or not, don’t forget your bubbly factor when you think about summer sipping wines. Get out the potato chips, french fries or popcorn and pop that cork on a chilled bottle of bubbles. Sparkling wine is not just for brunch anymore!
