It’s been said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.  I believe there has never been a truer statement.  I also believe this statement applies very justly to enjoying a glass of wine.  You see, enjoying a wine, that you like, is your own personal adventure.  You’re own bias.  It’s you flying solo.  You are, the “beholder” and the “beauty” is within the wine.

imageBehold the beauty of Acquiesce wines of Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards of Lodi, CA.  Acquiesce Winery produces only white wines, specifically Rhone varietals. Susan Tipton, proprietor and winemaker produced a total of six whites for 2012, in very small lots, that literally sell out before your eyes.  I had the fortune of sampling all of them this past year and was overwhelmed with how stellar these wines are.  Stunning is my word of choice.  This post specifically reviews three of them:  The Belle Blanc, Grenache Blanc and the Viognier.

Susan Tipton is one of many female winemakers these days putting a feminine mark on their winemaking style and making a name for themselves with quality wine.  Yes, there are beautiful and wonderful wines made by both genders in the wine industry, but I truly believe that there is a feminine nuance that a female winemaker can use in her ability to make wine that speaks volumes in the delicate nature of the wine itself.  Acquiesce white wines are such wines.

Let’s start with the name itself…”Acquiesce” (a-kwē-ˈes) To accept, agree, or allow something to happen by staying silent.  For Susan and her team, this means they seek to submit themselves to nature, to yield to the vineyard, to acquiesce to the grapes. A beautiful mantra to work and live by.  Next is the bottle.  There are obviously many bottle styles to use in the wine industry, but Susan chooses a unique, voluptuous and quite feminine bottle choice. Beautiful enough that I up-cycled my bottles into vases that sit in my bedroom with flowers. Then there is the label.  Delicate and feminine without a doubt.  Very suiting for the wine and the bottle.  Now for the wine.

imageA bright pale straw yellow in the glass.  The nose gives off banana, stone fruits, kiwi, pineapple and hints of lavender.  On the palate you receive crisp acidity with citrus and white peach. Delicate notes of white tea and a smooth, long finish. Lots of character and very well balanced. The wine is a blend of 60% Grenache Blanc, 30%  Rousanne and 10% Viognier.  A FIVE BOTTLE Rating and priced at $24.00 a bottle.

imageAlso a light straw in color with crystal clear clarity.  A nose of bright pineapple, lychee and lime. Very aromatic with subtle hints of lilac and herbs.  On the taste buds you have round mouthfeel popping with bright acidity of citrus lemon and sweet pineapple. A long finish with white tea and herbal notes.  Simply a  beautiful Rhone style wine. This wine paired very nicely with a crisp summer salad for dinner. A FIVE BOTTLE Rating and priced at $22.00 a bottle.

imageThis is my personal favorite of all of the wonderful wines Susan produces. Not only am I a big fan of this varietal, but this was probably one of the best Viogniers I have experienced.  A beautiful light golden yellow with absolute clarity in the glass.  A perfume of honeysuckle, lilac, sweet honey dew melon with an ever so light summer cut grass wafting out of the glass to your nose when you swirl.  On the palate your mouth is filled with floral notes of honeysuckle, white peach and white cranberry adding the acidity and crispness to this white.  Very light on citrus notes, which is what makes it so amazing….acidity if fully noted, but balanced with the light fruit and delicate floral. It’s lush and complex with a lingering finish that definitely leaves you wanting more.  A FIVE BOTTLE Rating and priced at $22.00 a bottle.

I will not acquiesce when it comes to sharing my wine experience with Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards and Susan Tipton’s exceptional winemaking talents.  This beholder sees much beauty in these wonderful Lodi white wines and although I have no problem flying solo on this one, I have enough confidence in what I’ve tasted that you will see the beauty too.
