Lodi wine country is not just about grapes and wine, but also about history. It’s history comes from the multitude of farming families that have thrived there, generation after generation. Over the decades, as the farming countryside has eventually lended its way to vineyards and wineries…the generations of Lodi families’ have strengthened and flourished and they stand tall today with pride and accomplishment of what is known as one of the best wine regions of California.
Generations of vineyard farmers and winemakers in Lodi today do something that only a small community of close families can do…work together in a team effort, one family if you will, to ensure the quality of the grapes grown and that the brightest of Lodi shows in their wines. What does this accomplish? A production of wines, by many different families, for all the world to enjoy and come to know what they have known for many generations….Lodi wines are some of the best.
Some of the top generational wine producing families in Lodi have recently released some amazing wines. The following is only a sampling of what is out there to try!
LANGETWINS FAMILY WINERY and VINEYARDS – 2009 CENTENNIAL ZINFANDEL This is a great example of food friendly wine. A Zinfandel that is a bright raspberry red with notes of spice and cassis on the nose. The Centennial Zinfandel is a beautiful wine on the palate. Spice, good acidity and balanced fruit of raspberries and cherries. Not a fruit bomb Zin, but a great food pairing wine and truly even better day two, as it opens up and blooms with further flavor and smoothness.
HARNEY LANE WINERY – 2011 LIZZY JAMES OLD VINE ZINFANDEL
A stunning and lush wine that will not let you forget it’s a Lodi Zinfandel! Dark red in the glass with hints of lavender color. The nose is sweet blueberry and blackberry cobbler. Bright acidity up front when you taste it, but then a smoothness that brings in the spice of warm nutmeg and the fruit of the dark berries and figs. Full bodied and elegant. A great Zinfandel for a cold winters night!
ST. AMANT WINERY – 2012 MARIAN’S VINEYARD OLD VINE ZINFANDEL
The Spencer family is known for the exceptional character in their wines. With the recent release of their Marian’s Vineyard Zinfandel….that “known character” has never shined brighter. This is a class act, top notch Zinfandel. Big cherries and raspberries bringing a little acidity to the party of white pepper spice and a balanced, long, amazing finish. This wine is to be enjoyed. On its own or with food….all that is required is friends, family and more than one bottle!
KLINKER BRICK WINERY – 2011 BRICK & MORTAR RED BLEND
This red blend will inevitably become one of your favorite go to wines. A fabulous table wine that is amazing on it’s own and great with pizza or black bean tostadas! A beautiful dark, Aubergine purple with notes of blackberry and cassis wafting to your nose. This red blend is primarily Cabernet, but with a bit of Petite Sirah and of course Old Vine Zinfandel…the blend makes for a smooth and creamy taste. Dark berry fruit and a long, silky finish. Elegant and sophisticated is what comes to mind when you drink it. Pure Heaven.
METTLER FAMILY VINEYARDS – 2010 METTLER ESTATE GROWN CABERNET SAUVIGNON
The Mettler family is honoring 100 years and five generations of farming in Lodi with the release of their 2010 Estate Cabernet. This is an exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and if blind tasted, one might think they were drinking something expensive from Napa Valley. A beautiful, dark garnet color with a nose of cassis and wood. Smooth red and black fruits of berries and plums with a little hint of vanilla and spice. Not a huge tannic Cabernet, but one with great structure and complexity with all the potential to shelf for a quite a few years. Only 7800 cases produced, so buying now is smart on this special celebration Cabernet!
If you are already a fan of Lodi wines, then please give these wines a try this fall. They are all magnificent. For those of you that have never tried Lodi wines…you are sincerely missing out. These would be great ones to try for your first time. When you think of family, farming communities, values and quality wine…think of Lodi wine country. The wines and families are no doubt exceptional….quite conversational….and, of course, generational!
