It’s almost spring time and that means the start of patios opening, barbecue grills being pulled out and Sauvignon Blanc wine!
Although Sauvignon Blanc is not strictly a spring or summer time wine by any means, it is however my favorite wine to enjoy in the spring. Why spring and not summer? There’s something about flowers blooming; grass turning green; spring vegetables and fresh fruits just coming into season that make bringing out a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, simply irresistible.
A recent Sauvignon Blanc that I tried has me thinking about fresh springtime vegetables…Lobster Reef Marlborough 2012 Sauvignon Blanc. This Sauv Blanc is a delicious glass of Marlborough New Zealand wine. It has many of the classic qualities of New Zealand Sauv Blancs, and you get all of the floral fruitiness that makes it a great white wine for many palates. A classic straw yellow in the glass, the nose on this Sauvignon Blanc is full of lilac and orange blossoms with fruit notes of pineapple and apricots. Very aromatic. On the palate, a wonderful citrus tartness of lemon and limes that do not overcome the fruit of pineapple, green apple, kiwi and grapefruit. The 2012 Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc is perfect for pairing with fresh spring peas and pearl onions or grapefruit avocado salads. It has a good body that will hold up to a slight bit of creaminess and a balanced acidity to handle any citrus or vinegars. I actually think this Sauvignon Blanc could hold up to a Lobster Salad due to the sweetness of the lobster (with no butter). Steamed asparagus with an orange citrus sauce lightly drizzled, would also pair well and even though asparagus is hard to pair with wine and not a classic pairing with Sauvignon Blanc, I think the orange citrus sauce would help the flavors meld into one.
Now you can see why I love Sauvignon Blanc in the springtime. So many fresh flavors to enjoy your wine with and the 2012 Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc is one that allows even more possibilities! This wine receives a FOUR BOTTLE Rating and is such an excellent value at $15 and under. The Lobster Reef 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is beautiful enough for affordable entertaining and casual enough for every day.
Make sure to embrace spring’s bounty of young harvest vegetables and fruits this year and with it buy up a case or two of Lobster Reef 2012 Sauvignon Blanc and let the season begin!
